Softer Than Soft

My mother-in-law introduced me to Barefoot Dreams this Christmas. All I can say is, "Aaaaah!"From outer wear . . . . . . to inner wear, they've got you covered. I'm most impressed by how this "bamboo chic" fabric seems to have its own internal thermostat. It doesn't make you too hot when you're inside or leave you too cold when you're outside. It's just right.

Scenes From Christmas

The Christmas weekend was filled with love, laughter and lots of good food. Couldn't ask for anything more!

Watching Paint Dry

This pastime goes from ho hum to aesthetically pleasing if you happen to have this contraption, or something like it, hanging from your kitchen counter. I think the H found ours at IKEA.

If You Give a Child a Camera

Early winter in Southern California has a cold, stark beauty all its own. Which my 3-year-old captured perfectly yesterday in these images. I've seen this idea around the blogosphere before, and am always amazed at how beautiful the world appears through the camera lens of a child. This is Snook's debut photo shoot. She is very proud.

Happy Holidays

We got our act together this year and had family photographs taken at Coronado Beach by a talented photography student that my friend Amy knows. (Thank you again, Amy!) Here are my favorite shots, a few of which made it into our Christmas card.Happy holidays to everyone and happy 2010!

More Good Eats

Last week's dinner menu included a real, honest-to-goodness, old-school-steak-house-style, table-side Caesar salad.Check the ingredients.Snook getting in on the raw-egg act.A splash of this and a stir of that. And voila!

Next up was lamb and winter vegetables. You know, I think I might take a turnip over a potato any day.Tis the season to eat!

Family Heirloom

The H made the prettiest and tastiest heirloom tomato salad the other night with homemade bleu cheese dressing. I'm hoping against hope that his passion for cooking runs in the family, as in S 'n' B start whipping up gourmet goodies for us any time now.

Double Take No. 12

These days, with S 'n' B on the cusp of turning 4 and 2, respectively, it feels like my babies are slip-sliding away. And here they actually are. Snook at around 20 months and Bubs at 15 months. At least I have the pictures to remember them by. Boo hoo hoo . . .

You've Come a Long Way, Baby

I haven't picked up this book yet, but it's on my short list of things to read. You know, it wasn't that long ago when girls who were graduating from college with a ring on their fingers were presented with a corsage, while their spinster sisters got a lemon. With the college's blessing, no less. You can listen to the author's enthusiastic synopsis here and read the review here. This picture kind of says it all.

It's the Sauce

What is the frickin' deal!?! I forgot to bring my trusty bottle of Tabasco sauce to work yesterday, the result being my veggies and cheese sandwich was beyond bland and practically inedible. It never used to be like this. Are the taste buds the first things to go? Not that the rest of me is completely intact, but c'mon!

Begging for Boden

Snook is all ready for the 2010 birthday party circuit with this new dress, courtesy of her grammie. But it might be a good idea to have a couple of back-ups, just in case this one should fall victim to a chocolate cupcake, overzealous paintbrush or a tempting mud puddle. In case you were wondering, Mom/Grammie. Love.

Brother See Brother Do

Snook has a shadow these days, and his name is Bubs. Which is great for painting . . . . . . potty training . . . . . . and for generally acting silly. Not so great for playing tea-party-dress-up. But still so cute and gratifying to see how much he adores her.

Mr. Pete Burgers

As fun as our recent trip to the happiest place on earth was, the highlight for me may have been dinner on our way home at Mr. Pete Burgers (the H has been sporting their t-shirt for years). Where the burgers are fresh and flavorful, and the fries strike that perfect balance between crispy and potatoey, with just the right amount of finger-lickin' saltiness. You know the fast food is good when you get in your car the next day and the lingering aroma makes your stomach growl, not turn over. If you ever find yourself craving a burger on that stretch of highway between San Diego and Anaheim, I would highly recommend stopping by.

Good Gumbo

I'm not sure if it was our stroll around New Orleans Square a couple of Sundays ago or the freezing cold nights we've been having (high forties/low fifties is freezing for a SoCal wimp like me), but the H was inspired to make some hot and spicy seafood gumbo the other night. There's nothing like being warmed up from the inside out.

Return to Disneyland

After an almost one-year break from our frequent Disneyland trips of yore, last Sunday we were right back at it.Family jungle cruise ride
Sending the Chargers some love from afar Good boy, Pluto! Awaiting the Princess and the Frog riverboat extravaganza There's Princess Tiana!
Snook got a case of the bashfuls
Until it came time to negotiate, of course. Luckily, we had two brave kids at the Santa Claus meet and greet. Bubs even piped up when asked what he would like for Christmas, "Choo choo train, pees." That place is so much fun!

Happy Taxifus!

Heard of any cool, new holidays lately? How about "Taxifus," invented by my very own Uncle Todd?! It's a combination of Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year's (a stretch, admittedly). I doubt if I'll be taking up the tradition any time soon, but I do love a tree with a theme. Can you tell my Uncle Todd used to drive a taxi? So did my dad!

More Melina

Here are some more inspired creations from my glorious cousin Melina's new Etsy shop. Doubtful that you'd find anything remotely close to these items in a mall. Which is exactly what I love about them. And that they're pretty and my cousin made them, of course.

Crème Brulee

Forget about ties, power drills and aftershave. Your guy would probably prefer a helping of Brulee this holiday season. From what I can see, Kiki and Perla have nothing on these newcomer trifles, direct from NYC. Not that those oldies wouldn't be goodies too . . . And in that much-loved category of gifts that keep on giving.

Mommy Cards

None of the mommies I have met over the years at various playgrounds, beaches, shopping malls, etc. has ever handed me her mommy card. But tell me these ones from Pear Tree Greetings aren't sweet and wouldn't be extremely useful for those times when you and another mom totally click but have no pens, paper, free hands, time, etc. to exchange contact info.So why haven't mommy cards taken off? Are they a little dorky? Over the top? More to the point, would you be scared of a mom who handed you one of these? Perhaps. But I do remember brainstorming with my mother-in-law once about how I could go about designing something like this because I truly thought they might come in handy. Looks like my mompreneurial ambitions (such as they are) were thwarted once again!

Dos and Don'ts

Sweet Ballerina - Brunette Stretched Canvas by Karina Bania

Never again will I tell Snook that ballerinas don't wear pigtails. I mean, have you ever?

Food 4 Kids

I heard about San Diego Food Bank’s FOOD 4 KIDS BACKPACK PROGRAM a little while ago on NPR, and now thanks to Alice I am finally getting involved. Everyone else can too! Here's what it's all about:

"The program was launched in 2007 to provide food to help chronically hungry elementary school students get through the weekend. Every Friday, eligible kids receive a backpack with child friendly items such as peanut butter, pop-top canned goods, cereal, juice boxes, fruit cups, raisins, pudding cups, granola bars, shelf-stable milk and macaroni and cheese tucked inside.

These kids receive free or reduced cost meals while school is in session, but do not have food available on the weekends or school holidays for themselves and their siblings. Food 4 Kids provides food directly to them, without requiring their parents to receive a referral to a local food pantry, pick up food at the pantry or prepare it at home.

Charitable donations are down this year, and hunger in San Diego County is up. Those of us who love food and view it as a pleasure are in a position to ensure that the children of our community don’t go hungry.

With that goal in mind, San Diego’s food bloggers and other members of the local community are coming together to raise funds for the San Diego Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. The program costs a mere $6.00 per week per child to fund, and a donation of $250.00 will fund a backpack for a child for the entire 36 week school year. Giving what you can afford will help us ensure the program continues to provide this much needed service!"

To participate in the fundraiser event, you can donate through the Firstgiving fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/food4kids. All donors on the Firstgiving page will be eligible to win prizes sponsored by local businesses, bloggers and individuals. Just be sure to include your e-mail address when you donate so you can be contacted if you win.

If you're in San Diego, you can also participate by bringing items to the food and backpack drive at the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market on Saturday, December 12 from 9-12. Recommended donations are any non-perishable kid-friendly food items and good quality neutral colored backpacks. Hope to see you there!

Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

Mad Love

The H made us the most delicious Mad Men dinner last Sunday night. It was a pickled vegetable salad with prosciutto and a soft-boiled egg. Inspiration can be found here. The H, the dinner, the dirty martini, the Draper-- I was definitely feeling the love.

Boo!

Pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting

Happy belated Halloween! I hope it was a great one for everyone. Ours was good but a little on the spooky side, thanks to an unexpected visit from the Ghost of Indecision. That pesky guy just would not leave us alone. For example, Snook couldn't decide if she wanted to be Cinderella, Chef Ariel, or a bat princess for Halloween. So she was a mixture of all three. Then, little Bubs couldn't decide if he wanted to be an elephant or Peter Criss from the band KISS. So he ended up being both."Peter Criss," wearing his pink ribbon to help raise awareness. My neighbor, Joy, made all of the boys' KISS costumes. They looked awesome!

As for pumpkin carving, there was both a nice jack-o-lantern (not pictured) and a mean one. And Halloween dinner was the same way. Should we serve bison steaks or buffalo steaks? We served both. Our friends, Amber and Jay

Finally, we couldn't figure out if we wanted to stay in our neighborhood and trick-or-treat or go to another friends' house for spider cake. So, again, we did both.It was both a very spooky AND A VERY FUN Halloween, indeed!

Toob Crazy

These Toobs from Safari Ltd. are my new kids' toy obsession. Both S 'n' B gravitate toward small figurines, for some reason. I hear this about my friends' kids too, come to think of it. Easy enough for Snook, but poor Bubs has been playing with mini-princesses long enough. Last week, I finally found something called the Dino Toob, and now I'm out to collect all of them. There are pirates, zoo animals, steam trains, cars . . . all non-toxic, all super fun, all under $10. Even the caps are fun with their rotating globes. Great gift idea too!

Nurses Wear Shoes

This poster represents what I think will be one of my toughest parenting challenges-- letting my kids do their own thing regardless of what I think is right or good or acceptable.

So Snook's poster assignment was to fill in the blanks on such topics as "This is What I Look Like;" "When I Grow Up I Want to Be;" and "If I Could Wish For Anything It Would Be." She told me her responses. We were good so far. Then it came time to draw or glue in pictures to go along with her answers. This is where things got ugly. I got the bright idea to go through magazines looking for pictures. But Snook got so excited when she saw certain pictures in the magazine that she didn't care if they matched her responses or not. After much back and forth, I finally just let her put whatever picture she wanted wherever she wanted, which is how we ended up with a shoe where a nurse should have gone, a 30-something-year-old woman where Snook's picture should have been, and a boat where an alligator should have gone.

The whole thing had me so flustered. On the one hand, the last thing I ever want is to do her work for her or to stifle her creativity. On the other hand, I want to help steer her in the right direction. I also didn't want her teacher thinking she (I) didn't care, or she didn't "get it," or the other kids laughing at her.

Of course, I angsted for nothing. When I handed the poster to Snook's teacher with a disclaimer about the pictures, she laughed and said, "Well, nurses wear shoes." So they do. I would have saved myself a lot of trouble if I'd kept that axiom in mind from the start. I hope I never forget it.
